FDA Asks For Consumer Comments On "Natural"
Food Labeling
|
The term "natural" on a product label can be
very misleading. Some food and beverages labeled
"natural" can contain unnatural ingredients.... The U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this month that will
start taking public comments on the use of the term
"natural" on food labeling starting November 12 and
lasting through February 10, 2016.

KIND Petitions FDA to Update "Outdated"
Food Labeling Rules

KIND has filed a citizen petition with the FDA to
update "outdated" regulations governing the use of the
term healthy on food labels and address the
disconnect between what Americans are encouraged to eat in the
Dietary Guidelines and the criteria governing claims manufacturers
can make on pack.

FDA OKs Genetically Modified Salmon For Human
Consumption
|
The Food and Drug Administration on [November
19] approved genetically modified salmon, the first such
altered animal allowed for human consumption in the United States.
The Obama administration had stalled in approving the fast-growing
salmon for more than five years amid consumer concerns about eating
genetically modified foods.

USDA's FSIS Releases Food Allergen Guidelines for
Producers
|
In an effort to reduce adverse reactions to food
allergens, along with potential recalls, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service
(FSIS) has released a 26-page set of guidelines to assist
meat, poultry, and processed egg product producers in properly managing
ingredients which could trigger such problems.

Could the SmartLabel Fix the Food Labeling Fight?

Food trade journal Sustainable Brands reported on the
new SmartLabel introduced by the Grocery Manufacturers Association
to help meet the public's desire for more information about food
and other products. Hershey is the first brand to adopt it.
