USDA's Version of New NFP Rule Sent to White House for Review
On July 27, the USDA sent its proposed version of their new Nutrition Facts rule to the White House for review. Titled "Revision of the Nutrition Facts Panels for Meat and Poultry Products and Updating Certain Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed," it is expected to closely mirror the FDA's two new rules released in May.
President Obama has signed a new law that would require all food labels to declare for the first time whether the item contains genetically modified ingredients. Just how clear those labels are, however, is up for debate.
FDA Provides Information to Assist Industry with New Nutrition Facts Label
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today published a Nutrition Facts label "Industry Resources" web page to help businesses comply with the requirements of the final rules, which were issued in May 2016.
An editorial ... a week ago drew attention to a bill in the U.S. Senate that would require labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. The editorial noted that the labeling bill wouldn't actually require labels - packages could list an 800 number or a code that could be scanned with a smart phone to lead consumers to information about a product's GMO content. Now Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., is warning of other deficiencies that make the legislation look even worse.
